[NI0075] "A German Marriage. Last evening at 6:30, at the residence of Capt. W. M. Winkler on Union Street, Mr. Eugene Langner was married to Miss Minnie Ebel, Elder Sweeney officiating. The German cermony was followed as far as possible, one of the features of which is the wedding rings. Before the words are pronounced which make them man and wife, an attendant enters bearing the rings. These the officiating minister places on the hands of the bride and groom, while appropriate words are spoken. The wedding last night was attended by but a few of the more intimate friends of Mr Winkler, after which an elegant supper was served.

The bride arrived from Hamburg a day or two age, making the trip alone to Cincinnati to consumate the engagement which had been made before the groom came over. She is quite handsome and is accomplished. During the evening she favored the guests with several songs. She has one of those fare German voices, and sings with excellent taste."

[NI0978] The last record of Jesse Carraway is December 28, 1846, when he sold his inheritance land from his father to his sister, Casandra and her husband, William D. Coleman. (to Henry Irwin which was his interest in estate of his faterh, Adam Carraway ?) The 1830 Franklin County, Mississippi census list a Jesse Caraway with 2 males under 10, one female 20-40, and one female under. This is a possible daugther with no records found.

He was listed with his family on the 1840 census of Union Parish, Lousiana, family 339. It is the belief of Mildred Morrison that it was Jesse's son, Adama A. H., who was listed on the 1850 census of Franklin County, Mississippi, with Sarah Carraway, his grandmother. Also, it is the belief of Mildred Morrison that another son, Bryant, was living with his aunt Cassandra and uncle William D. Coleman and listed on the 1850 Jefferson County, Mississippi census.

(From "Henry (5) Carraway and Family by Mildred Morrison) June 30, 1999, issue "Car(r)away Family News" Vol. 2, #2.

[NI0979] Believed Bryant A.'s middle name was Alford, but no documentation found.

Calculated date due to date of Court records of estate, Amite County, Mississippi. Guardianship of children. I have seen October 23, 1839 listed as a death date for Bryant A., however probate court records have him listed as deceased prior to May 27, 1839. As far as I know he could have died October 23, 1838.

The family story about his death goes: Bryant A. was racing his horse with a man or men and his horse side stepped a hole of water in the road and ran into a large pine tree. This killed Bryant A. and his horse. My father told me that when he was a child a black man who owned the land where this tree was located, told him the story and said that this tree was cut and put on a dummy line train to be transported to Summit, Mississippi. The train wrecked and the butt end of this tree fell in a creek and is still there to this date. The black man's name was Bartly Walls, who lived on Hwy 98 between Summit and Little Springs and Mt. Zion Road. Thomas Hardy Carraway, Sr.

1} Vol. 4, page 355: John Carraway petitioned the Council of Newbern on November 20, 1739 for 100 acres of land in Craven County, granted November 23, 1739.

[NI0996] On July 2, 1745, John Carraway made a deed of gift to "my loving son-in-law Aaron Smith" for 150 acres of land being part of the tract I now live on" s/sd of Neuse River and w/sd of Michael's Creek, Craven County, North Carolina (Book 3, pp 80-81).

Accord to Dr. James E. Carraway in a letter dated July 19, 1973 and written to Mrs. Eby, is the following:

"Elizabeth Carraway Smith was the sister of Henry Carrway of Craven, Dobbs, and Wayne Counties, North Carolina. He is my great grandfather, so I have studied this collateral branch extensively because they have a very interesting, through tragic history. John Carroway, Aaron I, and Aaron II were officers in the Rev. War. July 1, 1776 Aaron I, Elizabeth Carraway Smith, 3-5 younger children and their male slaves were massacred by the Tories and Cherokee Indians at their home in old Nintynine District of South Carolina. Some day I hope to get up the inspiration to write up their story."

Unfortunately, Dr. Caraway died in 1974 and as far as anyone knows he never wrote the story.

Deaths from old Georgia newspapers prove that Elizabeth, Aaron I, a son and a daughter were killed by Indians in South Carolina. Four sons and a daughter escaped with their lives. (Researcher Mrs. Thelma Landrum)

[NI0999] Duplin County, North Carolina litigation went on for 9 years from Sept. 1826 until March 20, 1835, between Henry Kornegay and Polly Maria Kornegay by her guardian Henry Kornegay VS Bryan Carraway, Susannah (Oates) Carraway and Samuel B. Bowden.

In 1823 Henry Kornegay says he owned 5 slaves and, in order to convey them to his family he deeded them to Susannah Carraway. On the same day Susannah Carraway deeded one slave to Polly Maria Kornegay and the other 4 to Nancy Kornegay, wife of Henry Kornegay. In April 1826 Susannah was living in the house of Henry Kornegay and his claim was she took the deeds from the house and destroyed them before they could be recorded.

Later, Bryan Carraway sold the slaves to his son-in-law, Samuel Baker Bowden who in turn sold them to sone unknown, unnamed party.

No decision was made by Judge J. Daniel as he thought there was not sufficient evidence.

p. 307 - From "The Georgia Gazette", Savannah. Death notices. March 20, 1800, Last Saturday, John C. Smith, Esq.

[NI2849] Aaron Smith was commissioned a First Lieutenant of March 18, 1779, probably in Capt. Uriah Goodwyn's Co. in the S.C. 3rd Reg't., where he continued to serve until the close of the war or the disbanding of the regiment. In October 1780, at a meeting of a group of officers of the SC line in Philadelphia, it seems the much reduced post-war Army was being regrouped and reorganized, and Aaron Smith was appointed to serve in the 2nd SC Regiment. The last mention of him is the 1785-86 receipt issued for his donation of one month's pay to the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization formed by and for the Continental Army officers in 1783 (Report of Sharon D. Jarvis, November 6, 1989, hired researcher for the Car(r)away Family News, Vol. 1, #4. [/ 8--Decendants of Elizabeth 5 Carraway Smith).

1965- P. 1075- Deaths from Old Georgia newspapers from 1817-1818 files of the Columbia Museum and Savannah Daily Gazette. "Tuesday, April 8 (1817), On March 23rd at his residence on the Savannah River in Barnwell District, SC. Aaron Smith , Esq., died in his 59th year. He was one of those worthies who bore the toils and difficulties of the Revolutionary War. Living then on the frontier of the state, his father and his mother, a brother and a sister were killed by the Indians, three brothers, and one sister and himself made their escape, and though they were young, he immediately took an active and successful par tin subduing those savage enemies. Afterwards he was promoted to a respectable commission and distinguished himself until the close of the war as an officer and a soldier. In the death of this amiable man, his family, relations, friends and neighbors have met with an irreparable loss. For many years he was a member and a deacon of the Baptist Church.

George Courthouse Records--Warren County Will Book A. Ezekiel was one of 3 three executors for will of George Medlock, dated October 2, 1800.

[NI2858] The dates of birth for the family of John Carraway V are from the family Bible of Stephen Oates and the record for this family is from "Our Ancestors" by Adele Ashford, pp 356-363: 'Some Carraway-Caraway Families by Thelma Landrum; Car(r)away Family News quarterlies.

The records of Kinston, NC were burned in 1880, however the Index to Johnston County, NC Deed Book 5 records a deed from John Carraway (IV) to John, Jr. (V) on p. 244. Adam on p. 190 and Bedreadon on p. 306. The deeds were dated between 1746-1759.

John Carraway V may have been married twice and second wife may have been a Smith. He probably moved with his father, John IV to Bladen County before 1764 and returned to Dobbs county prior to February 6, 1769. The 1769 Tax List for Dobbs County shows John Carraway Junr with 1 poll. (Note: John, son of Henry was not old enough to be counted as a poll).

After John V returned to Dobbs County, and Henry's son John became 21 it is difficult to determine which John purchased and sold land. John IV was deceased by 1776, leaving his son John V and grandson, John, the son of Henry, in Dobbs/Wayne Counties, North Carolina.

[NI2862] It is said that Moses was the first of the Carraway ancestors to use one "r" in his name.

Received land grant of 150 acres in Moore County, North Carolina on February 25, 1794. PB 105, p. 124, Moore County, North Carolina.

In February 1828 Moses bought 100 acres of land in Wilson County, Tennessee. In 1830 he sold 81 acres to son Lovet and 19 acres to Henry Shannon. In January 1835 he bough 73 acres on Barton's Creek from Jonas Swingley for $146.

Moses appears on the 1800 Moore County, North Carolina census. He is listed on the 1810 census of Burke County, North Carolina. By 1820 he had moved to Wilson County, Tennessee where is is listed for 1830, 1840, and 1850.

The 1860 for Wilson County, Tennessee shows Mary, wife of Moses, 88 years old living with their son, Elihu. this would indicate Moses had died.

Lovet Carraway was the administrator of Moses' estate. He reported an inventory and sale of property in May 1852. Lovet left Wilson County and move to Weakley County and Merritt then became the administrator.

Note: The Lewis Merritt Family Cemetery is located on the Homer Hancock farm on Sinking Creek, off Chicken Road, one mile east of Baird's Mill. There graves are unmarked as are all the others. This cemetery has been abandoned and no longer exists as a cemetery.

This information on the cemetery and of the daughter Mary who married Jack Holloway was given to Mrs. Thelma Landrum by Mr. Dixon L. Merritt, a descendant of one of Mary Merritt Carraway's brother, and was a lifetime resident of Wilson County, Tennessee, and who was familiar with the Carraways of Tennessee. Mr. Merritt is now deceased.

(From the records of Mrs. Thelma Landrum).

[NI2863] Aaron's first wife, name unknown, was probably the mother of his children.

A deed was proven in open court and ordered to be registered February 1795 from willis Agerton to Aaron Carraway. (Moore County, North Carolina Court Minutes p. 503).

It is presumed that Aaron, his 2 brothers, John and Hillery and a female, either a wife or sister Delilah, went to South Carolina with Elijah Carraway, their father's first cousin, about 1798.

Records for Darlington County, South Carolina:

John Carraway is listed on the 1800 Census, 3 males and 1 female
(Probably his 2 brothers, Aaron & Hillary, and sister Delilah)

On April 22, 1805 Aaron witnessed a deed from Kindred Holloman to Stephen Oates (Book G, p. 270).

On March 22, 1808 Aaron and Hillary witnessed a deed from Daniel Dubose to David Ware (Vol. A 1808-1808)

The 1810 census list Aaron Carraway with: 4 o/10; 1 26/45 males; 1 0/10; 1 10/16; 1 26/45 females.

On January 6, 1812, Aaron sold 264 acres to Newitt Delk. Witnessed by James and Stephen Oates. Sworn April 15, 1812 and recorded April 3, 1829.

Aaron is not shown on the 1820 census for South Carolina. By 1830 he is in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with 2 10/15; 1 20/30; 1 50/60; 1 15/20; 1 50/60 females.

(From "Our Ancestors", Adele Ashford. The children from Vera Dee Onstatt & Don Carraway from Car(r)away Family News, Vol. 2, #2, p. 22).

[NI2864] Probably went to South Carolina with his family in 1798 and probably the John Carraway found on the 1800 Darlington County, South Carolina census with brothers Aaron and Hillary and sister Delilah living with him???

[NI2865] The birthdate, the name of his wife and daughter came from the family Bible of Stephen Oates.

Hillardy probably moved to South Carolina with his brothers and cousins about 1798.

The 1810 Darlington County, South Carolina census shows Hillery Carraway with males: 1 0/10; 1 16/26; females: 3 0/10; 1 16/26.

In 1820 and 1830 he was in Burke County, North Carolina. In 1840 he was in Yancy County, North Carolina.

In the 1850 census for McDowell County, North Carolina, Hillery Carraway was listed with 2 single daughter's, Elizabeth and Matilda, living in the household of his son-in-law, John Holliefield. His wife Clarissa was listed living in Yancey, North Carolina with her children.

The 1860 census of Yancey County shows:

Eliza Carraway 55 South Carolina
Caroline 28 North Carolina
Henry 21 North Carolina
Merritt E. North Carolina
Clarissa 75 South Carolina
Daniel Anderson 9 North Carolina

[NI2881] The names and dates for Stephen Oates and his family were found in a family Bible belonging to Mrs. Cecil Norman (DeEtte Boyd) Oates in 1955. The transcript of the Bible is recorded in "Our Ancestors" Vol 1, pp 228-230, 1977 by Adele Ashford.

From Car(r)away Family News Quarterly, Vol. 1, # 2, June 30, 1989, the transcript from the Oates Family Bible pp 2 and 3. Notes from Mrs. Ashford on p. 3, "These pages are an exact transcript of the Bible record of Stephen Oates. I have Xerox copy of all 20 pages. Of course they are very hard to read, considering the age of the Bible and also the photostats were made so many years ago. We even sent the last two pages to Washington, DC to see if they could bring out the old ink, but it was impossible. You will also notice that Ferrebey/Pherreby Carraway was about 10 years older than Stephen. This is not a mistake. Since Stephen Oates died in Darlington County, South Carolina in 1817, it was assumed Pherrabey died there too. Mrs. Lucille Trimble, now deceased stated that Pherrabey died in 1822 in the area of Prattville, Alabama. She gave no reference as to where she found this information. On page 229 (Bible p. 13) a Wm(Dosse?) Oates. I later found out his name was Wm. Dawson Oates, from a descendant. On page 230 (Bible p. 16) the year for Moses birth was hard to read. It was 177 and the last number looked like an 0".

[NI2906] The place of marriage and the fact William died of Typhoid Fever in Richmond, Virginia is from a correction by Peggy Carraway found in the quarterly Car(r)away Family News Vo.. 2, #3, p. 35. Also found in "Our Ancestors" by Adele Ashford, pp. 357-358.

[NI2917] From the Car(r)away Family News Quarterly dated June 30, 1990, Vol. 2, #2, p. 23 article about the Hines family.

Hines family Bible in possession of the Roberts family, in the possession of Luticia Lee of Sanford, Florida, is the source for names and vital dates of this family.

Submitted by Mrs. Martha Roberts is the following:

"Willie Hines b. June 6, 1769, d. May 18, 1835, married Sarah (Sally) Carraway.

He lived in Wayne County, North Carolina at his death at age 66 he owned a large plantation of 700 acres, including the home, the mill together with dam privileges.

Jahu served the CSA army in Captain J. P. Lynch's battery of Tennessee light artillery during the Civil War. He was captured at Vicksburg when General Pemberton surrendered his army to General Grant on July 4, 1863. Rather than imprisonment, a parole arrangement was negotiated whereby CSA
captives would be exchanged for Union Army POW's. An exchange camp was set up where the CSA soldiers were to report, but Jahu slipped away and returned to Sevier County where he remained for the remainder of the war as a noncombatant.

David was listed as a deserter from the Union Army on December 1, 1863. He had enlisted only two months earlier on October 11th. On March 23, 1865, following an amnesty proclamation from President Lincoln on March 11th, he returned to service with company K of the 9th Regiment, East Tennessee Cavalry. Although the president's action removed the criminal consequences from desertion, it did not expunge the record. David Stinnett went on to serve for the rest of the war, but the
desertion remained a part of his record. In 1892 he filed an application for the removal of the charge from his record. The application was denied on March 9, 1892.

"Grampa Jim" was killed when a car ran off the highway in Saraland, Al. He was walking to home in Prichard, Al. Grandmother, Ella Nora Kelley came to Alabama ca. 1905 via train from Jonesburg, Grant Co., Indiana. She came with her mother, father, 1 brother 2 sisters. They got off the train in Fruitdale, Al. There were 5 families that traveled together, and all went to work, in the fruit fields at the time, and sent their produce back to Indiana, to be sold by relatives. "Grampa Jim" was a mail carrier, and my grandmother was a clerk at the Fruitdale Post Office, when they met. My Grandmother, being a Yankee" was not well liked by the Lowery's and did not visit them, however the children went with their dad to visit his brothers and sisters. (This is per email of James H. [NI6038] Notes for Adam Carraway, Sr. (II):
Died instate.

From Car(r)away Family News quarterly, Vol. 2, #2, page 15, article "Henry (5) Carraway and Family, researched, compiled and written by Mildred Morrison:

"Adam Carraway was under the age of 21 years when his father, Henry Carraway, died in 1784. In his will, Henry left his so, Adam, all of his land and tenements on the w/sd of Carraway Creek in the event that Adam arrived at the age of 21. On February 28, 1800, Adam sold land in Wayne County, North Carolina to Joseph Everitt, such land being located on s/sde of Neuse River and w/sd of Carraway Creek. This deed was signed Am Carraway. On April 15, 1810, Adam and his wife Sally, sold a parcel of land to James Rhodes that they fell heir to by the death of said Sally Carraway's father, William Alford, Esq.. From the Car(r)away Family News Quarterly, Vol 2, #2, p. 15 article "Henry (5) Carraway and family", researched, compiled and written by Mildred Morrison.

The deed was signed November 16, 1801 and Adam signed his name Am Carraway.

Shortly after this date, Adam and his wife, Sally, left Wayne County, North Carolina and went to Tennessee, where Adam Carraway, Jr. was born. Possibly, other children may have been born there. I have not been able to locate the county in Tennessee where Adam, Jr. was born or where the family lived. Perhaps they had no home as such as they were living in Franklin County, Mississippi by 1809/1811.

Adam Carraway owned a number of lots in the town of Meadville, Mississippi. By oral conversation with Richard White Carraway, my father, it was his understanding that his gg grandfather owned and operated a cotton gin in the town of Meadville and that his great grandfather, Adam Carraway, Jr., worked at this gin when he was a small boy. Due to the burning of the Meadville, Mississippi Courthouse, it is difficult to get a true picture of legal actions of Adam Carraway, Sr.. He did leave a will, but due to the burning of the courthouse, I was unable to find a copy of it.

On the second Monday of May, 1846, the will was proved, and admitted into record in Franklin County Court and Sarah Carraway, Executrix renounced her trust and on the second Monday of June, 1846, the Court granted and committed unto William D. Coleman the administrator of the estate of Adam Carraway, Sr.. Adam died abt 1846, and his wife, Sarah Carraway, died October 31, 1851. Adam, Jr. was granted full power to administer and pay debts."

The children of Adam (6) Carraway and Sarah "Sally" Alford is from Car(r)away Family News quarterly, Vol. 2, #2, pp 15, 17, 18, 19 "Henry (5) Carraway and Family", by Mildred Morrison and page 19, Bryant (7) A. Carraway and p. 20, Adam (7) Carraway, Jr. submitted by Pauline Carraway Davis.

[NI6040] According to certain land transactions in Franklin County, Mississippi, William D. Coleman was a brother to Judia An (Ann), wife to Adam Carraway, Jr.

[NI6255] Founded the West Finley Baptist Church in Rogersville/Fordland, Mo. was a baptist minister. He and his wife are buried there, and are probably the only Potter & Wilson family not buried in Pembina Cemetery, at least up to the time of their death. There was some question as to where they were to be buried but because of his founding the church there that was their wish.
